Hazel Blears questions Health Secretary on cuts to nursing posts
Yesterday at Health Questions in Parliament, Hazel Blears MP for Salford and Eccles questioned the Health Secretary about the number of posts being cut at Salford Royal hospital. Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust needs to reduce operating costs by 15% over the next three years resulting in nearly 200 posts being cut this year and a further 200 posts being lost over the next two years. At Health Questions on Tuesday (10th January) Hazel Blears asked the Minister: “When the Secretary of State, together with the Prime Minister, visited Salford Royal hospital last week to praise the nurse leadership, was he aware that the hospital has cut 200 posts this year and is about to cut a further 200 posts over the next two years as a result of having to take 15% out of its budget? Does he not agree that nurse leadership is important, but that we also need the nurses on the wards to be able to deliver effective patient care?” Hazel added: “It’s all very well the Prime Minister talking about the excellent standards of care when he visited Salford Royal last week, but those standards are achieved by the hard working nursing staff. The Royal College of Nursing has produced figures showing that 48,000 nursing posts will be cut across the NHS in England. “Here at the Salford Royal, that means nearly 400 posts will be lost over the next three years. Clearly that will have an effect on patient care and it won’t be the nurses or the Trust to blame but this Prime Minister who continues to push on with his dangerous Health Bill in the face of opposition from doctors, nurses and other health professionals.” Source: Hazel Blears Press Office.
