Tenants view and discuss plans for Eccles tower blocks
City West Housing Trust is consulting with customers living at Barton Village in Eccles about its plans to transform the landmark tower blocks. More than 100 local tenants turned up to view and discuss their landlord’s plans to modernise the out-of-date tower blocks which are in desperate need of renovation. City West plans to invest around £14 million, giving the four 50-year-old tower blocks a new lease of life and bringing them into the 21st century. Wade House, Engels House, Cawdor House and Enfield House sheltered housing scheme will be revamped into a modern urban community. Colette McKune, Director of Asset Management at City West Housing Trust, said: “The people who live in these blocks of flats are central to our plans and we are really keen to talk to the tenants about how they would like to see them improved. “This is an exciting regeneration project that will completely transform the existing tower blocks, providing excellent quality apartments, a new sheltered housing block and a new community facility. “So far the feedback has been very positive, but we will be continuing with consultation events throughout the summer. We want to make sure the design improvements to the inside and outside of the blocks and the sheltered housing scheme meet with our customers’ needs and aspirations. “We’re determined to make sure our customers get the homes and services they deserve. At the end of the consultation we will take all of their views on board when finalising the design.” Representatives from Bullock Construction and the Halsall Lloyd Partnership, who will be carrying out the work, were also on hand to answer any questions. Residents were shown plans for the area and examples of the kitchens and bathrooms due to be installed. Plans will include the full refurbishment of the apartments with a remodelled interior, new kitchen, bathroom, windows and doors and heating system. While the outside of the buildings will be over clad to improve the thermal efficiency, making them warmer for the people who live here, and significantly improving the appearance of the blocks. All services will be upgraded and the communal areas completely transformed to include improved security, video entry systems and CCTV. A state-of-the-art community facility will be developed on site and the surrounding area extensively landscaped and enclosed with perimeter fencing. The Barton Village redevelopment will build on the significant improvements City West has already made to homes in and around west Salford.
