Top tips on keeping warm this winter in Salford
With energy prices soaring and the cold weather rapidly approaching customers of City West are being given top tips and keeping warm this winter. The Chatter Bus – a mobile information point where customers can get information from their landlord – has been out and about talking to people in West Salford about how they can heat their home for less. City West’s own energy advisors were on board giving advice on how to become more energy efficient, explaining how to maximise boiler and heating controls, giving various tips and handing out low energy light bulbs. The energy advisors will also carry out home visits. As part of the multi-million pound investment City West launched following the transfer of homes three years ago, the social landlord has replaced inefficient heating systems, insulated walls and roofs, and fitted double glazing in many of its homes. The work is well underway with more than 5,500 news heating systems installed and more than 16,000 new double glazed windows fitted. State-of-the-art new EcoPod Heating systems, which utilise solar power, are being installed firstly at Barton Village and eventually to the other four high rise blocks, to heat the high rise tower blocks for less. As well as reducing fuel costs and carbon emissions by more than 40%, the EcoPod also features a system which automatically alerts the landlord when ‘at risk’ tenants fail to adequately heat their home. Nigel Sedman, Head of Investment and Regeneration at City West, said: “Due to rising fuel costs, affordable warmth is a significant and increasing issue for our customers. We are helping them address fuel poverty in a number of ways. “Fuel poverty is defined as a household that needs to spend more than 10% of its income on fuel to heat its home to an adequate standard of warmth, this being 21°c in living areas and 18°c in other occupied rooms. “We are also helping customers reduce their fuel and energy bills through organising a competitive preferred supplier for heating and power, and making sure pre-payment meters operate on the same tariff as standard meters. “Helping our customers become more energy efficient is a win-win situation. By following some simple advice our customers can reduce their carbon emissions, improve their quality of life and save money.” Photo: City West energy advisors Callie Lonsdale and Jonathan Newton get on their bikes.
