'Lowry-style' Eccles tower blocks planned
Tower blocks with a colour scheme inspired by artist LS Lowry have been fast-tracked by Salford City Council. 349 homes in Eccles in four City West blocks will see the outside of their building change to reflect the colour pallette of the most famous Salford artist of them all. External renders of ivory, black, vermillion, Prussian blue, yellow ochre and flake white - all signature Lowry colours - will be added to the currently grey concrete blocks, say the social housing company. City West Housing Trust’s Director of Asset Management, Colette McKune, said: “It is really important that our properties are not seen simply as bricks and mortar but make people proud of their homes, feel part of the community and inspire them to lead more prosperous lives. “Not only are his famous ‘medium’ colours his signature but they provide us with the opportunity to tastefully breathe new life into the blocks and transform the Eccles skyline while building customers’ allegiance with their homes.” The changes are part of a multi-million pound refurb programme by City West. Plans are also afoot to replace existing expensive electric storage heaters with which the housing provider says will cut fuel costs by more than 40 per cent. Energy efficient doors and windows will be fitted, structural repairs undertaken, insulated render fitted, grounds landscaped and communal areas will be refurbished at the 50-year-old blocks. External improvements to improve the thermal performance of the blocks are scheduled to be completed by September 2012.
