Crime maps for your street launched
by Tom Rodgers

The government today launched a new website where you can find out exactly what crime is going on in your area.

www.police.uk promises "instant access to street-level crime maps and data" so residents can independently track crimes locally, rather than relying on police figures.

The online resource, launched today by Home Secretary Theresa May, is intended to give residents up-to-date information on crime happening in their communities.

Crime figures for individual streets across Salford can now be analysed thanks to new hi-tech maps.

Using a street name or postcode, visitors to www.police.uk can instantly view figures on crime and anti-social behaviour.

As of this morning however, the website was so heavily subscribed that it was impossible to get it to load!

However, some have voiced opposition to the new sites, claiming some areas will lose out on new movers and house prices could be hit in areas performing badly.

But Ms May denied the accusation, claiming house prices were not affected and that the tool would help fight crime over time.

She said: "I think people are going to welcome the fact they can really see what's happening with crime in their area, not just on their street but in their neighbourhood.

"I think they will feel a greater connection with the police, with much more information about where they can go to, and who they can work with."

And she said the maps would also allow communities to question police on their activities.

"This is giving people a real tool, real power to see that something is being done about crime in their area. This doesn't make them frightened, it actually makes them feel a part of what is happening," Ms May added.

"This will give them the real facts and figures. This will make the police more accountable. It gives people a real tool to hold the police to account."
