The European Parliament backed an S&D call for removing child porn websites, following a year of negotiations on a new EU directive voted in Strasbourg. The new provisions include better protection measures such as the removal of child porn websites; more effective prosecution of criminals; and special support for victims. The key elements in the fight against child abuse are the harmonization of criminal offences and penalties, and better preventive measures. BIRGIT SIPPEL (S&D MEP) SAYING (ENGLISH): "The main point of the injury report is I think is that now we have in the whole European Union common standards, not only to describe offenses, but to have common standards on the sanctions. And this is regarding the child abuse, child exploitation like forcing children to prostitution and it is of course on child pornography which is a very big issue and becoming great, so we have to do something against this." 3. CUTAWAY: Mrs SIPPEL TALKING 4. BIRGIT SIPPEL (S&D MEP) SAYING (ENGLISH): "This is a thing that is very important because with the new medias, with the internet, videos and pictures from child abuse can be spread very far, that's why we talked about the solution to delete or block the pages with such a content, and I'm very happy that we found a solution to remove all those internet pages and that all Member States have to work on it, and the blocking is only an additional possibility for member states, and it is a very big effort, a big progress that Member states even have to work together with third member states, to ask them to delete the webpages with child pornography on their country." 5. CUTAWAY: HANDS OF BRIGIT SIPPEL 6. BIRGIT SIPPEL (S&D MEP) SAYING (ENGLISH): "The point of children working with the internet, because children and young people do very much on the technical way how to work with news medias, but very often they do not know what is happening behind. They give many data to the internet without thinking about it. So, to give media competence to young people is very important and here we really do need to work very hard." 7. CUTAWAY: BIRGIT SIPPEL WALKING IN THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT 8. BIRGIT SIPPEL (S&D MEP) SAYING (ENGLISH): "I think it's a very good agreement, the report, because now we have common standards and common rules on offenses and sanctions, we have some new rules for example on the grooming, with so far has not been an offense described in all the Member States. We have common rules on the sex tourism and on the liability of legal persons, so we have a very broad approach to all the child abuse messages. We also have some questions to ask member states, to strengthen their effort in the prevention area which is very important too."
