Salford Angel's latest club knit for sick kids
by Tom Rodgers

At the Angel Centre's Creation Cafe, the knitting revolution continues with a new knitting club.

And their latest project will help sick babies to recover from life-threatening illnesses.

Over the next two years the largest ever knitted patchwork blanket, will be produced by various groups across the country. It's in aid of Bliss, the special care baby charity, who provide vital support and care to premature and sick babies across the UK.

Each member knits 10cm x 10cm squares, which are then brought together to make the giant quilt, which will be big enough to cover the entire length and breadth of the football pitch at Old Trafford.

Despite a long period in the wilderness, thorugh movements like Stitch and Bitch and Art Yarn, knitting has come back into fashion. Most of the group knit to relax, and enjoy coming to the meetings to spend time with friends and to be creative. And the variety of things you can produce with two knitting needles and a ball of wool is quite staggering...

And so, how could we resist having a go?

My own attempts were completely hapless. Some young children had picked up the skill in a matter of hours (including Chloe, who features in the video), but it took me about 20 minutes to produce one stitch. I valiantly retired then, my one stitch complete, and vowed to leave the knitting to the professionals (and the amateurs)!
