Salford jewellers advice for customers with golden dentures

With Winston Churchill’s gold mounted dentures fetching over £15,000 at auction yesterday, they certainly achieved more than their scrap value. But, as Mays - the North West’s largest independent pawnbrokers and jewellers - can reveal, it’s not just famous dental work that can be converted into cash.

Mays, who are based on Mather Way, Salford Precinct which also offers a cash for gold service online and at its four Manchester outlets, regularly receives gold dental crowns amongst the bags of gold odds and ends that customers have decided to cash in on.

Jason Darrington, Assistant General Manager at Mays, said: ‘’We receive a number of gold dental crowns a month. Each one isn’t worth an awful lot by itself in real terms, but with gold prices still at an all-time high, savvy customers are collecting all their unwanted gold items that are gathering dust at the back of drawers and bringing them in to be valued as a mixed bag – single earrings, gold coins and antique coin holders are items we’ve been presented with recently – which can add up to a considerable sum.

‘’In days gone by, it was commonplace for people to proudly invest in items that we now see as purely functional – like lighters or toothpicks in precious metal – but the general public is now, understandably, more concerned converting its unwanted gold into much needed cash.

‘’Whilst there’s nothing more special than gold or platinum jewellery, we’ve found that these days it’s mainly specialist collectors who are keen to pick up everyday items made out of precious metal: we’re currently showcasing gold toothpicks and a solid gold biro and notepad cover in our Royal Exchange branch. Quirky items that appeal to our antique hunter client base just can’t be melted down!’’
