Mayor invites Salford to a garden party

The Mayor of Salford is having a garden party and everyone in the city is invited!

Salford City Council's civic lawns will be transformed for the day as the authority puts on a show for residents to see for themselves what their council can do for them.

Councillor Roger Lightup, the city's Mayor, will be hosting the celebrations on Saturday 19 September with entertainment for all ages.

Entry is free and residents will be able to put their leading councillors on the spot with their questions in the Big Ask session.

There will be lessons in circus skills, face painting, art workshops, bulb planting and bird box making and sports activities with live performances from local youth dance groups and an older people's choir.

Following the success of last year's Hot Dog competition, the dog show is being held again this time with prizes for the best dressed, most obedient, waggiest tail, prettiest pooch and an overall champion judged by the Mayor. Residents are being encouraged to bring their dogs along to compete.

The police will be with their dogs in a separate display and will be meeting people to talk about their role in the community with the fire service.

Senior officers from Salford's Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership will be answering questions from the public on crime, anti-social behaviour and community safety in the Face The People session at 12.30.

As part of ongoing public consultations, children will also be able to try out new play equipment that could be coming to playgrounds across the city.

Mayor of Salford, Councillor Roger Lightup said: "This is a party for everyone in Salford and I'd like to encourage people to come down for a fun-packed day which has a important theme behind it.

"The message we want people to take home from the party is that they can make a difference in their communities by getting involved in local decision making and we want to use the event to help show them how.

"It's going to be a great day out for all the family and as well as the activities there will be lots of information about the types of services the council offers and how these can help local people."

Salford's garden party is recognised by the European Local Democracy Week (ELDW) for helping local people to get involved in decision making in their communities.

Councillor Keith Whitmore from Manchester championed the ELDW and encouraged take up across local authorities in Europe.

He said: "This event will help to reconnect people and communities with local issues and decision making processes, and I am very pleased Salford is one of the first to take this forward here in the UK."

The event will start at 12noon until 4pm with barbecue food available.
