Plans for a new high school to replace The Swinton and Moorside sites have taken the next steps forward. Salford council's planning panel approved the first stages of a planning application for the new school which will see The Swinton and Moorside high schools replaced with one single campus.
The green light on the plans moves forward the council's vision to transform secondary education in the city under its Building Schools for the Future programme.
Outline proposals for the new building show a 1350-place secondary school for 11 to 16-year-olds and a new, larger Moorside primary for 420 children aged from three.
The proposal will include the rebuilding of Moorside Primary School, the relocation of the Deans Activity Centre into the new school and a base for Salford's Music and Performing Arts Service. The site will include the land south of the A580 East Lancashire road which will be turned into playing fields.
It will also have a 60-place nursery, community facilities, a replacement provision for the Deans Activity Centre and will house the Salford Music and Performing Arts Service (MAPAS).
It will be built on the current Moorside high playing fields with the existing Moorside school site used for sports activities.
Local people have been consulted on the early designs which will now be worked on further and a more detailed planning application will be submitted later this year.
The new Swinton and Moorside high school is set to open in September 2013.
The plans so far can be viewed at http://publicaccess.salford.gov.uk/publicaccess under the application number 10/59643/OUT.
