Salford Approve Canopus Towers

Two more residential towers for Manchester have received detailed planning approval by Salford City Council.

Designed by Arca Architects for the BSC Group, the scheme features 163 and 117 metre tall residential towers with 403 apartments. An "apart" five star 230 bedroom hotel is also included in the scheme set away slightly from the two towers whilst there will be retail on the ground floor of the buildings and landscaped public areas between them.

They feature retro sixties design that belongs in Thunderbirds rather than Greater Manchester. Immediately noticeable is the soar of huge concrete smooth "super columns". Running up the sides of the building they create sheer faces for a portion of the tower and a contrast, with the textured windowed areas of the scheme that have solar shading in front of the fenestration.

Facilities within the towers will include a spa and pool on the roof of the shorter one and an observation deck on top of the taller one giving peeping toms a perfect opportunity to look at all the bathers below.

Given it is such a high profile scheme, it offers BSC a chance to prove wrong their detractors and show they are capable of realising large-scale schemes.
