RAGE still angry over Forest Park
Tom Rodgers met Karen Garrido to talk about the recent events surrounding Peel Holdings' application to build the Forest Park and racecourse on 2000 acres of privately-held land across Worsley and Boothstown.
Peel have called for (and got) a public enquiry into the viablility of the new development, which now, instead of being decided by the council, will go to the Secretary of State. Karen runs RAGE (Residents Against Greenbelt Erosion) with her husband, Councillor for Boothstown and Ellenbrook, Robin Garrido, and says that the potential traffic problem that would be caused by having race meetings are absolutely insurmountable. "The only way you can go south is at the Junction 13 of the M60, and they [Peel] say there'll be 20,000 people coming to one of these meetings. It would cause traffic chaos." The Highways Agency had recently put Peel's plans on hold when they invoked a TR110 injunction, meaning that until the traffic problems had been resolved, planning permission for the planned racecourse, along with a hotel and 'eco-village', was not to be granted. Karen also cites the lack of permanent jobs as a poor feature of the racecourse: "The one they should be concentrating on is the Reds stadium at Barton, they are going to be full-time permanent jobs. With the racecourse only running 30 days a year, the only jobs created will be part-time, seasonal jobs." Due to problems with spam only SalfordOnline members can now leave comments.
