Mass decontamination at University
by Tom Rodgers Over 200 officers from the fire, police and ambulance services carried out a huge operation at the Castle Irwell university buildings in Lower Kersal this afternoon. The mock-decontamination was part of an attempt to be ready for a large chemical spill in Salford. Nearly a hundred student volunteers took part in the exercise, putting them in quarantine in the Pavillion building, then removing all articles of clothing and all personal effects. It looked like a scene out of a Hollywood film, as orange-suited evacuees headed into the decontamination showers and were washed down with soapy water, then led out into the field while the officers were showered down and debriefed. Hazerdous Materials Officer Garry O'Neill said: "Because of the exercise that we were trying to simulate, the students arrived at 9am and we locked down the Pavillion building. The New Dimension programme from the government has given us this new equipment, and we want to make sure we're absolutely ready for this situation should it arise." "There will be a hot debrief after the exercise between all the services after the event," he added. Due to problems with spam only SalfordOnline members can now leave comments.
