Fabulous Fanny Gogh comes to Eccles

Interview and Editing by Tom Rodgers

Words by Tony Flynn

Sian Doherty aka Fanny Gogh, the celebrated artist and designer, has spoken to SalfordOnline about her plans for world domination - through knickers and art.

Last week Sian attracted worldwide press coverage from such countries as China and the USA, as topless models - painted with camouflage bikinis to cover their modesty - walked through Manchester city centre to show their support for troops in Afghanistan.

Sian has also made the headlines with her collages of recycled underwear, one this year was entitled "Knickerbokaglory" which was sold to raise money for Comic Relief. The Sun jumped on board soon after - she received underwear from the paper's Page 3 Models from which a collage was made called, "Ice Cream Sun-dae", again being sold to raise money for Comic Relief.

Sian's gallery in Peel Green is at the moment full of bags containing underwear donated by big celebrities as Ricky Hatton, The Salford Reds Rugby Team, Denice Welsh, Coleen Nolan and Rob Schneider, which will all be used to make even more collages for charity.

Away from the underwear, Sian is a talented artist painting canvases and embelleshing them with beads, glitter, gems and feathers a process which she calls "Beautiful Trash". She has also recently painted wall murals for a nightclub in New Brighton depicting 1940s-style burlesque dancers, which are really eye catching.

For further details of Sian's artwork, follow the links below.

Pope Richard , I am an ex wife of a serving soldier, I am a mother of two young children, I marched with the girls in Manchester as a collector, fully clothed. I didn't find them crude, lewd or rude. They were fun, behaved like ladies and were treated as such by the public. If however you have such a hang up about the female body , or anybodys body, you can always "look away" . No one is forced to stare are they, if you think a pair of knickers or boobs is pornographic then you are very easily pleased and I think quite sheltered. The march brought a smile to many faces, as a collector I can tell you the most generous and the most supportive were the pensioners, both male and female!! The older generation saw it in the spirit it was meant.........as did many ages. Pornography.........no definately not, I don't know which boys school you attended but you were sold short if you think a pair of knickers or boobs is porn. But as they say " don't knock it till you've tried it" Well done Sian and all the girls and all the helpers , it was a fabulous day and I enjoyed your company immensly. Marie

Art is anything that provokes a reaction. Sian, hats off to you for provoking such worthwhile and relevant discussion. Richard Carvath possesses seriously out of date opinions and beliefs. Methinks the gentleman doth protest too much! :-)

More to the point when is the next one!, I missed the last one, great work Sian, ignore the idiots out there.

I was outside Harvey Nic's when the girls trooped past behind Sian - and it was an amazing sight!! Sian's a DOER not a TALKER - I'm afraid Mr Carvath is very much the latter. How dare you, Richard, preach morals to somebody who is getting out there and doing good??? "I've seen £600+ collected by moral, clothed women in 5 minutes more than once!" - prove that statement, you liar. You're spritually bankrupt, bitter and soulless. You find nudity obscene, and oppose anything that empowers women. You're essentially a nasty little Nazi, a billious and warped tumour that feeds off the good things OTHER people do. Shame on you. Hold your peace, keep your hideous and vile opinions to yourself and let Sian get on with her fabulous work. Damien T

The important thing is to look at the work she produces - it's all about the imagery. Sian's made genuine and positive connections with people; something most people find impossible if they're honest.

Hey well done you and all the girls who took part. I love it when people do "stuff" and it must have been very brave in ICY manchester LOL. Anything that generates comment and discussion is good because it means people are stimulated - Isnt that what art is for?

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE! Stop pandering to RC! This isn't about him, don't let him hijack this one like he does so many others. Let's stick to the point of the article and not give him another platform, he's got enough on this website as it is. Richard, if you respect this site, take the initiative and invite people who want to debate with you to go to your blog instead of this item, better still go look at the latest headline on Salfordonline and talk about that. Hi Richard.. I couldn't be bothered I'm afraid. It would be a total waste of my time. Thanks for the offer. Fanny may I take this chance also to thank everyone that has posted such supportive comments... Thanks again and Goodnight ! XXX

Don't think so. No one wants to see Carvath on video. I've got a mate in Iraq at the moment and I too support anything that brings more awareness to the job troops are doing out there to keep this country safe. Go on Fanny, say knickers to the knockers.

Carvath an armchair activist!! Carvath is very much frontline and operates in dangerous areas of activism such as directly opposing gangsters, terrorists, traffickers and drug dealers. Carvath has plenty of experience of being in the firing line and he knows what it is to face armed enemies. Carvath does important work which literally saves lives, Fanny has a fetish for collecting knickers and sticking beads on them. Let's keep a sense of perspective here!

As a former soldier myself I welcome any activity that CONTINUES to make people aware of the plight of our forces. Sometimes shock tactics are required to achieve the desired effect. Perhaps the eloquent Mr Carvath could describe the lengths he has gone to in order to better equip our fighting forces? No? Probably far too busy criticising others work, standard fayre for an academic. As with any other crusader for decency I suggest this: Please don't feel you have the right to speak on my behalf, your opinion is valid but it is yours alone, I can speak for myself. In my opinion the artists heart was in the right place, her actions selfless and if the end result is that more of our service personnel return home safely, I am content. If you are offended by this representation of the female form then please look away. Sadly our forces must face their enemy daily with no option to moan and turn their backs, how lucky you are with your view from an armchair. Good luck to you Fanny, I hope the campaign is a huge success.

Go on then, exactly what is there to pity or laugh at about Richard Carvath's stance on pornography? If you got Carvath together in a room with soldiers to talk about pornography believe me they'd listen with respect as he explained the difference between a warrior and a w**ker. Where some pratts get the idea from that Carvath is some sort of a softy I don't know: Carvath can be hard as a rock and fearsome as a lion when he needs to be (I should know, I've seen it).

Report as offensive or innapropriate Comment by Guest  18th October 2009
Well he's not respected by the majority here. I don't think anyone's suggesting he be scared, or to expect hostility, just to be pitied and laughed at i'm afraid.

what a breath of fresh air this lady is, she is different and quirky. The topless march was wonderful and helped a very worthwhile charity. Thank you fanny.

Richard Carvath is a respected political activist and author as well as a PPC for Salford and Eccles and he is not afraid of situations in which he may encounter hostility.

Yawn Yawn! Who is this guy? and why does he think he has the right to dictate morality. I'd like to see him preach that crap to room full of hot blooded troops.

Report as offensive or innapropriate Comment by Richard Carvath  18th October 2009
Sian... yes, of course prostitution (and related activities) makes money - it's the primary reason for doing it! It's a major reason why you are engaged in making pornographic 'art', is it not? But prostitution is not necessary to raise money for a cause. You could've raised a lot more money by moral means - it's a shame you did down what you claim as your cause. I've seen £600+ collected by moral, clothed women in 5 minutes more than once! The old chestnut "It's not pornography - because it's art" is as old as the hills and it has been the excuse for pornography since the year dot. Topless women parading around a city centre is public indecency and it is against the law of this land; Greater Manchester Police decided to abrogate their solemn duty to uphold the law and that was a sad and disappointing betrayal of the British people but it does not surprise me - GMP is now diabolical in much of its conduct. The pornographic pictures of the women did not give "pleasure" to our troops but they would've incited lust in them; pornography is the destroyer par excellence of authentic masculinity and so exposing troops to pornography only distracts and frustrates them and weakens their effectiveness in combat; pornography makes men into wimps - not warriors. I also love sex and a woman's body - BUT - in the right moral context and circumstances! Sex and nudity are good in the right circumstances but your ideas about sex and nudity are depraved and immoral.

Report as offensive or innapropriate Comment by Guest  18th October 2009
So Sian is diabolical and the girls involved are prostitutes according to Richard Carvath even though it all had police and council approval and it raised money and awareness for a good cause. And this sad bitter little man thinks he speaks for the people of Salford!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Report as offensive or innapropriate Comment by Guest  18th October 2009
Brilliant answer Sian! Your wasting your time though Mr Carvath brands any woman who displays her body or has sex outside of marriage as "whores" and "Prostitutes". Surprisingly he's single lol lol

Hi Richard.. First of all I Thank You for igniting this thread, It's been great fun! If you took the time to read the comments left by others properly you will note that the comments wrote by myself I stated "I" Yes "I" Fanny Gogh.... I am interested to know... Do you consider a life model posing nude a public indecency? AND how can my event be an act of public indecency if it was totaly legal and had full support from the police and council? The wonderful girls that allowed me to paint their beautiful bodies would be naked at ANY time and ANY place possible.. as they are strong passionate women who love sex and love their bodies..SO yes Mr 'C' Woman CAN be in control.. is THAT what really angers you? There is no way on earth that anyone would have raised 600 pounds in just under an 2 hours shaking buckets! TITS sure do make money!!! and I Love it!!!! The pics of the girls have given a lot of serving troops a lot of pleasure... and my PAINTBRUSH on the girls NIPPLES gave them a lot too!!! XXXXX

Report as offensive or innapropriate Comment by Richard Carvath  18th October 2009
I don't have a problem with art or women. I am opposed to prostitution, and in regard of the topless stunt I am clear that it represented an act of prostitution at heart. There was no need to do anything (with or without clothes) to raise awareness of the circumstances of our troops in Afghanistan - the British people are already well aware; therefore the topless stunt achieved nothing in regard of the ostensible stated aim of raising awareness. And if the primary purpose was to collect money, well, as I've already said, there's no need to go topless to collect money. I feel very confident in speculating that far more money has been raised for our troops by clothed persons not seeking attention for themselves than by the women involved in the topless stunt. Why the need to be topless? It achieved absolutely nothing (except personal publicity for the pornographic women involved and, in particular, for ringleader 'Fanny'). And to the person accusing me of religious ranting, I see no religion and no ranting in anything I've posted on this comment thread.

Report as offensive or innapropriate Comment by Guest  18th October 2009
Why would Sian or any other woman want to meet to justify themselves with the sexist Richard Carvath? It's plain from the comments on here just how well Sian and the girls are thought of and how very few agree with any of Carvaths religious extremist rants.

Report as offensive or innapropriate Comment by Guest  18th October 2009
i think the real motive is to put smiles in this miserable town aswell! you see people like you make, humans feel like robots! have you seen the change in our town from back in the sixty's to now, the difference is smiles! they were'nt exactly naked they were covered buy camoflauge paint which i think is very creative! they were cleared to do the march buy the counsel and such relative organistions!! so what is you're problem? do you have a problem in art? or women?

Report as offensive or innapropriate Comment by Richard Carvath  18th October 2009
There is no need to prostitute oneself by committing an act of public indecency in order to collect money for our troops. The women involved could've collected just as much money with their clothes on (which therefore begs the question: what was the real motive for the topless stunt?). A lot of people collect money for lots of causes and they manage to do so without getting their tits out in public. For the record I am not about repressing women - quite the opposite - and that is why I am opposed to pornography, prostitution and abortion. The stupidity of the women involved in the topless stunt does their gender no favours at all. I'd be quite willing to meet with 'Fanny' and her topless pals in person to discuss the matter further but - in the absence of any such meeting - if they want to hold a discussion with me here it would be both helpful and respectful if they would state their names and declare their involvement.

i think sian has done a fantastic job!!who cares what happens to raise money for a charity thats why it is a charity to raise money! i think jealously is the cause in them comments, having served out in afghanistan and iraq over christmas periods,i know first hand on what it is like and how people are out there!and the biggest moral is to open something which the've bin away from for so many month's! letters from people we don't know wishing us look! we even send letters back saying how much we appreciated them, unfortunately for people who dont know what is like! one smile may save a life! and i think what sian is doing is help saving lifes buy keeping moral high! i dont agree its pornography its fun and art! look the word art up, you might find the meaning!keep up the good work hun you have our support!

oh dear, it's a shame to see the narrow-mindedness of some people. This is not glamourised pornography nor is it camouflaged under a 'good cause' title. This is all done in jest and has probably contributed to awareness and support to contentious issues more so than the guests of the negative people have done no doubt. There's a real sense of jealousy going on in this thread, which I think any up and coming talent will have to endure and overcome which no doubt "fanny gogh" will. All the best my lovely!!! x

Ha... Mr so called "C".... since when has a bra and knickers been pornographic....If you check your facts... 1..The artist mentioned has had a successful 20 years in the international Art and Design industry and you will be surrounded by her products and illustrations on a day to day bases.. She also won a university exchange prize in the USA to study life drawing which I my add she is pretty amazing at.. "Yes Nuuuude Models" that is...!!! 2..This "Fun" Event raised 620 pounds for the charity 'Support Our Soldiers" in just under 2 hours and the amount has been rising ever since as people are donating online still. 3.... The grateful response from our armed forces has been overwhelming for all the girls involved. 4... All the girls involved had a personal connection with someone serving at present. 5... A petition to raise awareness of the lack of equipment was sent around that was presented to Downing street on 10th October. 6.. Naked bodies are not pornographic.. they are beautiful...!!! 7.. The Event had all relevant licenses in place from Manchester council and police. 8...The only thing that is 'Cynical' is YOU... 9...I bet I know what kind of pants you wear!!!!! 10...Also I suggest watching a good clean porno!! They're great!!!! XXXXXX 9.. I'd love some help painting the next one!!!

A sense of f-u-n is required to appreciate Fanny's art - and her raising money for Breast Cancer and Sport Relief is obviously a not terrible thing either!

Report as offensive or innapropriate Comment by Richard Carvath  17th October 2009
This pornographically-minded 'art' is pathetic and diabolical in my opinion - and what makes it even worse is the attempt to ennoble and dignify this rubbish by trying to link it with a good cause. I made my comment about the recent stunt in Manchester on the Salford Advertiser's website. The idea that the stunt somehow raised awareness of the issue of British armed forces equipment is utterly ridiculous! There was hardly a lack of awareness of this issue before the stunt. There are many organisations and individuals helping the troops already: the stunt achieved nothing. The stunt was a cynical and selfish opportunity for self-promotion for those involved - nothing more - and trying to dress it up [pardon the pun] as being somehow a morally good, selfless or charitable act cuts no ice at all.

It strikes me that this got valuable publicity globally for a good cause, it raised money too. And the girls and passersby all look like they enjoyed it. So I add my voice to the others who put it so well.... knickers to the knockers!!

Report as offensive or innapropriate Comment by Guest  16th October 2009
She's making art fun and whatever else it's done it's raised the profile of the lack of equipment for the armed forces and raised some smiles too. How anyone can say the girls involved have "prostituted" themselves is beyond me. Perhaps the radical Christian PPC that has been criticising her and the girls needs to go out and get a girlfriend of his own rather than taking his obvious frustration out on Fanny and the girls.
