1000 new college places for Salford welding academy
by Caroline Kullendorff

John Wilkinson has a long legacy of working in Salford. He set up his first business in 1972 after being made redundant from his job as a TV repairman and it is still going, as Wilkinson Star, 37 years later.

Now a new welding academy is in the offing, as John explains, there's a need for welders to be kept up to date with the very latest technologies. New machines are emerging not every couple of years, but every couple of months, and on college and university courses financial pressures can prevent students and the lecturers who teach them from access to these latest machines.

The new academy will offer 1000 places to train per year to begin with, but Mr Wilkinson expects the numbers to rise as final-year students and professsional welders get wind of the scheme.

The training school will be constructed at the Worsley base of Wilkinson star, and John confidently predicts that they will be ready to open in February 2010.
