Hazel Must Go choose candidate tonight
by News TeamAt the Old Pint Pot pub on Salford Crescent tonight the campaign to oust Hazel Blears will choose their candidate.
At stake is the new Salford and Eccles parliamentary seat.
The pressure group say they have three potential candidates who will speak at the meeting, then attendees will decide who will represent Hazel Must Go at the general election.
Alec McFadden is confirmed to contest for the candidacy, along with community campaigners Rachel Cavendish and David Henry.
David, also active in the Salford Youth Council, said: "For 15 years I have fought for the rights of young people, voluntary workers and those marginalised within our communities. I am committed to helping rebuild a sense of community within Salford and would oppose those who seek to divide us."
Rachel, an environmental activist who has lived in Salford since the 1980s, said:
"Having worked with some of the most vulnerable people in Salford for much of my life I am committed to social justice. I am passionate about the environment and beyond that I believe that the 'Charter for Salford' drawn up by the Hazel Must Go Campaign is a list of demands that would benefit the people of this city."
She then tried to join the campaign to save the Hope Hospital Maternity Unit and failed to understand, or share the needs or aspirations, of the people of Salford.”

Mr McFadden, of the Salford Unemployed and Community Resource Centre said last summer that he would stand as a socialist/community candidate against Hazel Blears.
The trade union activist said that Ms Blears 'failed to understand
or share the needs or aspirations of the people of Salford':
"The present Labour Party Member of Parliament, Hazel Blears has brought Salford and the Labour Party into disrepute by making false financial Parliamentary expenses claims, acting in a hypocritical manner when she voted, in Cabinet, to close maternity units across Britain."
Steve North, Secretary for the campaign, said: “On Thursday 4th February the people of Salford will have a historic opportunity to vote for the candidate our campaign will be supporting in this year’s General Election. Rather than holding a secret meeting at the Town Hall, we are inviting the general public to come along and have their say.”
The meeting starts at 7pm.
