Salford Council to spend £3m+ on MediaCity roundaboutsSalford Council is apparently set to spend over £3 million on improving two roundabouts near MediaCityUK.The news was revealed in a short article in this week's Private Eye magazine. Lighting, subways, pedestrian crossings and cycleways are all set for a complete overhaul. The project, called the Quays Gateway, has been funded by £3.155 million grant from the North West Regional Development Agency. It was announced in a report to the Lead Member for Planning, Cllr Derek Antrobus, on 20th October, and was decided on 3rd November. The first, at the top of Trafford Road at the junction with Regent Road and the M602, will be refurbished at the cost of £1.6m. A prickly quote from the investigative journalists at Private Eye notes: "The council hopes it will help the 'development of the roundabout as a destination'. It will feature such delights as "resin-bonded gravel", "functional lighting" and "vandal-proof plaques" in its subway." There is also a 'ring-fenced' £169,902 for ten years' maintenance. Works will start on site in March 2010 and are currently expected to be completed by the summer of 2011. The second roundabout refurbishment will cost over £1.5m, to include a pedestrian crossing and some architectural lighting, along with colour-coded signs "to identify the major routes from the M602 roundabout linking to Albion Way, Cross Lane, Regent Road, Trafford Road and Broadway". The report notes that the following groups were involved in consultation throughout October and November 2009: Ordsall Community Forum, Ordsall and Langworthy Community Committee, Ordsall Environment Task Group, Ordsall Cycle Forum and the Pendleton Area Forum.
