Council "make no apology" for £3m roundabout spendby Tom Rodgers After Private Eye published a negative story on two roundabouts near MediaCity being refurbished at a cost of over three million pounds, Salford Council have finally commented. A spokesperson for the Council told SalfordOnline: “We are not talking about some minor modifications to an insignificant traffic island here, we are talking about a major engineering undertaking for the city’s busiest intersection. “Sixteen lanes of traffic meet at this junction, leading to Salford, Trafford and Manchester. It is the natural gateway to our city and to the flagship developments of Salford Quays and MediaCityUK. As noted in our original article, a £3.155 million grant was given to Salford Council for the work by the Northwest Development Agency. The spokesperson also wanted to highlight that: “We have consulted widely on our proposals for many months and they have been well supported by the community. In fact the requests for improved pedestrian crossings and subways have come directly from the community. “They and I are proud of what we are doing in Salford and I make no apology for having an appropriate welcome to our city.” The programme, which includes updates to lighting, subways, plaques and pedestrian crossings at the two roundabouts, was decided in November 2009 after consulting with various local groups such as the Ordsall Community Committee.
