Salford Council leader answers on Salford's biggest questions

by Tom Rodgers

In this interview we ask the Leader of Salford Council to answer questions about the current stories in Salford at the moment.

They include:

*The Draft Core Strategy, which sets out development plans in Salford over the next twenty years, including greenbelt and housing

*His council’s response to losing the argument to close St George’s School in Walkden

*The new council budget, and how the 0% council tax rise is being paid for

*The Building Schools for the Future programme

*How his Council would function under a Conservative government

There have been bigger scandals in recent weeks, like figures of a £30,000 spend on biscuits (Manchester Evening News) and a £40,000 water bill (Salford Star) but we've sidestepped these to give time to more fundamental questions about how the Council operates.

Don't let John Merry fool you. Salford's council tax *HAS* gone up this year. The council's "efficiency programme" is their way of admitting they have been wasting YOUR money for years and now that it's almost election time, they are starting to address the wastage. Perhaps if we didn't lose hundreds of thousands of pounds on a council-subsidised icerink and at least tried to break even on the Proms event, we could've had a council tax cut this year (or at least spend the savings on filling in all the potholes).

Merry doesn't seem too sure how the council tax thing is being paid for. Can anyone confirm this 4,000 new households?
