Salford community campaigners discuss the way forward
by Tom Rodgers

At a meeting of the Community and Voluntary sectors this week, at Pendleton Gateway, Brian Wroe gave a passionate speech about the plans ahead for "Building Better Neighbourhoods".

Attending the meeting were some of the leading lights of community campaigners, grant funders and voluntary sector workers across Salford.

They included the passionate and forthright Jim Collins from Salford Heart Care, the chair of the Salford Disability Forum Josie Brown, Shell Buckley from the voluntary women's centre in Eccles, Lee Turbull from Child Action Northwest, Carol Blinston from Joan Lestor House in Walkden and Kathleen Sheridan from Age Concern Salford.

On the agenda was reviewing Neighbourhood Working and addressing the 'silo' mentality of the Council, police and social care services, who can tend to work on their own without consulting the community and voluntary sector about policy.

Community groups, who work very hard in Salford to give local people a better life, were incensed at some recent Council proposals and plans, which saw, for example, Healthy Living workers parachuted into the area with funding behind them, completely ignoring the same kind of work already established in the area by community groups which is, if not completely, then very underfunded.

It was an incredibly positive result to see so many clued-up and passionate people with plans to bring great things to the Salford community.
