Video: Salford's young carers pack for Mayor's charity
by Tony Flynn
Sainsburys store on Regent Road Salford saw busy shoppers being helped to pack their shopping by youngsters from the Salford Young Carers group. 14 young people caring for parents, relatives or siblings in Salford joined in with gusto under the supervision of Diane Duffy, collecting money for the Mayor of Salford's charity. At one stage the Mayoress rolled up her sleeves and got stuck in, packing shopping away, the Mayor, Councillor Roger Lightup told me that he would have got involved but was frightened of dropping eggs and other breakables onto the floor, another likely story. The young carers are children under the age of eighteen, with an average age of twelve, who carry out significant caring tasks and assume a level of responsibility for another person, usually a parent, which would normally be taken by an adult.
