Video: Seedley Cottage Garden opens
by Tom Rodgers

After six years of negotiations, planning applications and sheer bloody hard work, the Seedley Cottage Garden opened this weekend.

Residents celebrated with food, drink and dancing and Ordsall Community Arts sent down their samba drumming band for a bit of joyous noise-making.

Denise Laurukenas from 14 Grange Street and nearby neighbour Tracey Caterall, of 38 Grange Street spoke passionately about the changes that alleygating had made to their community spirit.

They were joined by 50 or so locals all excited to see the garden open after so much strenous effort and hard labour.

Meral Mercan-Darby, of the Seedley and Langworthy Trust (SALT) co-ordinated the community's effort; with 40 alleygated areas and 32 residents associations to help and look after, the SALT have done a marvellous job here.

The Mayor of Salford, Councillor Roger Lightup, officially opened the garden and spoke with gusto about the changes that the Cottage Garden would make to the local community. He said:
"This is a wonderful resource, if you want to let the kids play and chill out with the drink or read the paper, you can do that here, and you know it's going to be safe.

Mainly funded by the Central Salford Urban Regeneration Company, with other grants from the Northwest Development Agency, Salford City Council and Salix Homes, the garden represents a reboot for Seedley and Langworthy's community spirit, which was much in evidence at the opening event.

We wish them all well for the future.
