Video: Harman hits WalkdenBy Victoria Howell
As a first time reporter, sent to cover my first news story for SalfordOnline, it was up to Walkden to film the Deputy Leader of the Labour party Harriett Harman. The Leader of the House of Commons was there to support Labour Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Barbara Keeley, and to thank her and her campaign volunteers for their hard work. Harriett was also in Salford to visit the Sure Start centre at Little Hulton and to discuss the positive effects that Sure Start centres have in their communities. Harriett said: "Meeting the mums and some of the dads there, seeing how well the children are doing and just reminding the parents that we want to have more of these centres and will be supporting them. But that depends on Labour being in Government." When questioned about the 2010 election Harriett said: "I think that there's a lot of interest in the election campaign but a lot of people have been taking a while thinking about making up their minds." She also urged campaigners to stay focused, telling the group that "there is no appetite for David Cameron on the doorstep." Barbara Keeley answered questions regarding the Sure Start centres and why people should vote Labour: "I think it's really important for people to understand that if they want to protect the frontline services that they really benefit from, like the children's centres and the other family support they get, they must support Labour."
