The Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority (GMITA) have announced a £382,076 grant to fund a new bus route from Salford Crescent train station to MediaCityUK on Salford Quays.

It is expected that the new public transport will improve local residents' ability to work in the new companies surrounding the BBC's move to Salford Quays.

Currently a bus journey from Central Salford to Salford Quays requires two changes.

A spokesperson for GMITA told SalfordOnline this morning:
"While we do have a Green Bus Fund for eco-friendly transport, we've not appointed a contractor for this service yet. Similarly the stops on route from Salford Crescent to the Quays have not been decided."

It is expected that the bus will stop at Salford University and Salford Crescent on the way to Salford Quays.

There are no indications at present of new bus services from East Salford to the Quays.

The new service is due to start running at the beginning of 2011.

Vice Chair of GMITA, and Councillor for Worsley, Ian Macdonald said: “I am delighted that we have once again been successful in our Kickstart bids, providing a number of new and enhanced services to passengers."

Councillor Keith Whitmore, Chair of GMITA, said: “This latest boost will provide support for a mix of new services and enhanced frequencies for some existing services."

“This will be a vital service, linking rail and bus networks with the growing education, leisure, employment and residential opportunities in the Salford Quays area.”

I live in Claremont and don't drive, so should I want or need to get to the Quays or the Trafford centre I need two bus's and it won't change, we have been asking for years and yet again left out. Jobs that will come from the BBC will be very hard to get to form this end of Salford. There are lots of people like myself who don't drive and no one is listening to their needs. Mary Ferrer
