by Tony Flynn
Over 150 people crowded into the Queen's Arms pub in Patricroft, last Saturday to attend a meeting of the Say No To Green Lane Incinerator protest group. Hazel Blears the Salford MP chaired the meeting and spoke quite forcefully against the proposed incerator plans, and especially Anthony Hirsch from Sky Properties who in his leaflet for the proposed incinerator refers to local people as "human receptors", she also stated that the "phoney war" was over and the real fight starts today.
She gave grounds for the objection stating the close proximity of the plant to residential areas and parks, the impact on the highways with added traffic congestion, the effects on the local environment and urged local residents to send in their letters of protest to the planning department at Salford Council.
Other speakers included local councillor John Cullen, Hani - El - Qasem and Steve Garner who all gave the audience ideas on how to take the protest further, 4,500 leaflets were distributed to local householders urging them to write to the council whilst Phil Austin the owner of the Monton Lighthouse is planning to display a sign from the lighthouse protesting against the planned incinerator.

A bit of fun banter is never a bad thing but maybe this topic is a bit too serious to be detracting from the importance of opposing this threat to all the local communities |

It's all getting a bit silly now, isn't it folks. We're playing right into Sky Propertie's hands... squabbling amongst ourselves. He's dividing us prior to conquering.
Patricroft roads are Monton roads, Patricroft air is Monton air. Lets all pull together to stop this thing and its traffic from blighting our whole area. PhilML |

So when did Monton Lighthouse become Patricroft Lighthouse, or Monton Green, Patricroft Green, its a darn sight closer to Monton bridge than Patricroft bridge. |

If you check the boundaries you may find that the "Eco" dump site is actually in Patricroft, not Monton. It's South of the M602, but hey it's probably easier to try a shelve the issue as someone elses problem and leave it to the Monton lot to try and stop it. Well played. |

Patricroft Pete is entitled to his opinions, would the good folk of Monton be bothered if the eco park was built on say, Cawdor Street or Station Road?, I think not, well said Pete. |

pete seems to have gauged the situation very well |

Are there any intelligent people in Patricroft? Surely you're not going to let Pete represent you?
Use your imagination... this stinking monstrosity is going to affect the whole area, including Patricroft, which I've always thought to be a nice place, with nice people... I've obviously not met Pete. PhilML |

I'm the chap in the white shirt at the end of the video and also the Chairman of the opposition campaign. I currently live in Monton, but grew up in Patricroft and went to Lewis St school (on the next street down from Station Rd). This is an Eccles issue, not a Monton one. Eco Park? read between the lines people. If this gets passed, it will open the door for the surrounding properties who also want to process waste. Salford has worked hard to get out of the mess it was in 10 years ago. If this goes ahead, it will be the first step towards becoming the armpit of the Northwest. As in most of this type of situation, those with the loudest objections, usually have the best chance of defeating something like this. Make your voices heard. Hani. |

I atill maintain that the good folk of Monton would not be up in arms if the eco park was dumped in Station Road Patricroft, " not really really our place place to interfere in other peoples affairs" "pass the Balsamic will you darling" Patricroft Pete |

I read Pamela Welch's article int he Advertiser, she says 50 people were at the event, how much had she had to drink?, I was there and there was well over a 100 people in, in fact you could not enter the main room it was that full.
Any chance of Anthony Hirsch talking to SalfordOnline, would be interesting to hear his side of the arguement |

Monton folk are famous throughout Salford for their Liberal views, Guardian readership, racial and ethnic equality, love of fine wine, balsamic vinegar and Summer fairs and their open arm policy to new people and ideas, they were the 1st to have a Italian eaterie, bisro's and chic charity shops were the locals went to be seen doing their bit for charity. So why don't they be the first on the block to have their own "Eco Park" could make for a good topic of conversation over the pasta and veal ( I've heard its scrummy )any way don't forget its a southerly wind in Monton and it will carry all those unusual smells towards Patricroft, where lets face it, you don,t give a s*** about the place or people who have the misfortune to be stuck there.Patricroft Pete. |

Yes, I've just seen the 'artist's impression' of the incinerator site... what a joke.
Where are the neighbouring houses, and school? where's the 200 foot high chimney, where's the smoke? where are the 164 trucks? where's the log-jammed traffic? Where are the pedestrian school children?
Come on Mr Hirsch, you'll have to do better than that. We know you consider us to be merely 'human receptors', but we're not that daft. Change your plans... work with us. PhilML |

I got my booklet from Sky Properties yesterday about the proposed site, what a con. It is in a nice green colour to give an eco friendly look to it, complete with photos of low energy lightbulbs, raw vegetables(?) and best of all an artists impression of the site with two joggers running past it, unbeliavable.
Don't be fooled by this gobbledygook, its an incinerator plant burning household and domestic rubbish, twenty four hours a day, belching out potentially noxious fumes, with hundreds of HGV's passing through Monton daily seven days a week. Eco friendly my ar*e. |

Tony Many thanks for your coverage on what is a key concern for the community with the proposal to develop the waste centre.
From the out turn on Saturday it is quite clear that there is a real rise in energy to object to the proposal of the waste centre and it must be said that the community have accepted that the ex Mitchell & Shackleton site needs to be developed to create job opportunities and enhance the area. This was certainly re-laid in the one and only CLG meeting with Sky properties some time ago where the community expressed there interest to work with Sky Property to pursue alternatives schemes for the site.
Kind Regards,
Steve G |

Thanks Tony for yet another well executed reporting project.
Yur coverage will be very useful in letting people know that the real fight starts now.
To any readers who signed the petitions in the early days of our campaign, can we ask you to write into the planning dept. again to register your new objection now that the application has actually gone in.
