Video: Ellesmere Street Party, Patricroft
by Tony Flynn

Sunday saw the residents of Ellesmere Street, Patricroft, Eccles hold a street party to raise funds for their annual children's day out.

The event was organised by Joanne Blake along with residents of the street who all enthusiastically joined in the fun and games.

DJ Mark hosted the event and he soon had the children and adults joining in the events, which included sack races, three legged races, singing competitions, five a side football and the most bizarre game which involved the men swinging a potato on a piece of string between their legs and knocking another spud along the field, you had to be there I suppose.

Stalls were stocked with cakes provided free of charge by CostCo, other stalls had books, videos, bric a brac, tombola stalls with all the money raised going towards the childrens day out.

A BBQ provided free food and drink for the children, the adults had to pay, naturally and as a bonus the sun shone all day.

The money raised will take the children for a day out to Southport or a pantomime at Christmas.

Singing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star there were Tyler Johnston and Anya Kavanagh!

It was really good to see a community spirit thriving and everybody joining in giving their time for free, congratulations to everybody involved.

I was born at number 120 Ellesmere Street back in 1949. It looks very different now. Not really a street at all. I don't recall there being any grass to play games on in those days. Much improved. A.H.

A great example of community spirit alive and well in Eccles, love that weird potato race thing, was Luke Kavanagh cheating?.
