Salford is recruiting Love Food Hate Waste Champions.
Salford residents are being asked to join the campaign to reduce food waste.

The Love Food and Hate Waste campaign is looking for new members to promote the benefits of reducing food waste in their communities.

A special 'Pass it On Day' (at the Orangery in Heaton Park on 30 March) has been organised to pass on the important message of reducing food waste.

Community leaders, local clubs, charities, schools, or just good neighbours in Salford are being asked to sign up and encourage their community to help the environment and save money by reducing the amount of food waste created.

8.3 million tonnes of food is thrown away by households in the UK every year. Reducing food waste is a major issue and is not just about stopping good food from going to waste; wasting food costs the average family with children £680 a year and has serious environmental implications too.

If we all stop wasting food that could have been eaten, the CO2 benefit would be the equivalent of taking 1 in 4 cars off our roads.

The campaign, which has ran for the last two years has included cookery lessons, food demonstrations and road shows in Salford. The events and community engagement have provided help and advice promoting the importance of reducing food waste.

John Bland, Treasurer and Deputy Clerk to GMWDA commented: “This is a brilliant initiative and a great finale to a successful two year campaign. We hope that encouraging Love Food Hate Waste champions to promote the environmental and economical benefits of reducing food waste will help us achieve our aim of zero waste to landfill.”

The Love Food Hate Waste champions will be invited to the Orangery at Heaton Park on the 30th of March 2011, for the ‘Pass It’ on Launch. They will receive training, meet local recycling teams and be given their very own free resources pack, filled with all the essential items needed to run their own successful Love Food Hate Waste events.
