Choose to re-use your bike!
Recycle for Greater Manchester is encouraging Salford residents to think about their unloved bicycles this week, as National Bike Week gears up for 2011. Thinking of buying a new bike? Then also consider what you plan to do with your old bike. Residents in Greater Manchester have the opportunity to donate their bike to a bike re-use project. There are community-based projects across Greater Manchester that can use your old bike. They will refurbish it and either donate to a community activity, sell it locally at an affordable price, or use it for spare parts for other bikes. Bike re-use is great news for the environment and your community! One organisation who make good use of old bikes is the Nationwide Cycling Academy (NCA). They collect old, abandoned, unloved bikes and give them a new lease of life and use them for various different activities like Bikeability training courses in primary and secondary schools, organised family rides in the local community, as well as making a pool of bikes available for summer cycle camps during school holidays. Councillor Neil Swannick, Chair of GMWDA said: “Many bikes are thrown away and the ‘recycle your bike campaign’ aims to increase the amount that are re-used. By donating your bike, you are not only helping the environment, but also making a difference to your community. Re-use is very important to help reduce waste and with the help of Greater Manchester residents; the aim of zero waste to landfill is achievable.” Remember it doesn’t matter how old your bike is, all or part of it can be re-used or recycled! So if you have a bike you no longer use taking up space in your garden or shed, then visit www.recycleforgreatermanchester.com to find out where your nearest bike re-use project is. Look out for Recycle you Bike promoting bike re-use at Exchange Square in Manchester on the 24th June, as part of Bike Friday. We will be offering information and advice between 8am-10.30am.
