On Sunday 29th January a new 44 metre footbridge was craned into place linking Spinningfields with Stanley Street in Salford.

A 1,000 tonne crane was needed to haul the massive structure into place, drawing crowds of local people.

Gavin Hulme, the Project Manager from Eric Wright Civil Engineers said that it would take another two months before the bridge could be used by the public.

Robert Owen Brown is the celebrated chef at the Mark Addy pub, just metres from where the new bridge lands.

"I think it'll have a massive impact on our business, bringing people from Spinningfields across the river into central Salford."

Stanley Street on the Salford side of the river is also set for new lighting and paving improvements to create a 'riverside routeway', say Salford council.

Council leader John Merry said the footbridge, which was some 12 years in the making, would "unlock the economic potential of this area of Salford" and set the scene for more development in the New Bailey area.

The footbridge is the third of five proposed Manchester to Salford connections across the Irwell.

It is part of the £72m Irwell River Park investment programme, developed by Salford, Manchester and Trafford councils and using funding from the now-defunct Northwest Regional Development Agency.

A new commercial scheme tied to the footbridge is expected to be announced in early spring.
