Final stage of redevelopment at Salford Royal Hospital
Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust has embarked on the final phase of its £200million redevelopment scheme. 2012 marks the culmination of ten years’ hard work and planning and the last year of the programme to improve the site and landscape areas for staff, patients and visitors. Salford Royal’s Director of Strategy & Development Simon Neville said: “Last year was a momentous year for the hospital redevelopment scheme with the opening of Hope Building and The Christie at Salford Royal. “We were delighted that Prime Minister David Cameron’s visit to the Trust included him going on to wards within Hope Building and he was able to see the high quality facilities we are offering our patients. “The next six months are going to be both busy and exciting as we head towards the creation of a new patient and visitor car park in the heart of the site and a new major corridor to link parts of the hospital. We’re also putting the finishing touches to Hope Building, including a new café and shop.” To clear space for the new car park, the Trust has demolished several of its older buildings, some of them dating back to the 1880s. Masonry from some of these will be crushed and used to infill the basements and for the base of the new car park. Additionally, two delicate ornamental terracotta roses have been salvaged from the gables of the old buildings and will be incorporated into the new garden. Mr Neville said: “These buildings are an important part of our history so it’s nice that we can keep parts of the old to help us build the new. As these old buildings have gradually disappeared, the complexion of our site has been totally transformed. People travelling along Eccles Old Road will notice the biggest difference to the appearance of our hospital. “It’s full steam ahead between now and the summer to complete the redevelopment and as ever, we’re grateful to our patients, visitors and staff who continue to cooperate with us whilst we carry out building work.” Source: Salford Royal NHS Trust.
