Metrolink Makes Way to mediacity:uk

People in Manchester will be able to find out more about plans for a new Metrolink service to mediacity:uk in Salford Quays next week.

Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) is holding a special two day event in the GMPTE Online information centre next to the Piccadilly Gardens Metrolink stop.

GMPTE staff will be at the centre from 11am to 7pm on Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 March. 3,000 questionnaires have also been posted to local residents and businesses as part of a six week consultation.

Work on a quarter of a mile (0.4km) extension to the Eccles Metrolink line is due to start next year, and four new trams have also been ordered to double the frequency of daytime services into Salford Quays.

Transport bosses are consulting on the proposals ahead of submitting an application to the government for a Transport and Works Act order. If the application is approved, the order will give permission for trams to run to the new mediacity:uk Metrolink stop.

David Leather, GMPTE's Chief Executive, said: "The Metrolink extension to mediacity:uk is part of a major expansion of the network, which will also include new lines to Oldham and Rochdale, Chorlton in South Manchester, and Droylsden in Tameside.

"The Salford Quays extension will start near the Harbour City stop on the Eccles line and end at a new tram stop in mediacity:uk. We want to find out what people think about our plans to help us put together an application for a Transport and Works Act order.

"We'll have staff at the GMPTE Online information centre next week to answer any questions about the new Metrolink service to mediacity:uk and to record comments. I hope people will visit the centre to tell us what they think about the proposals."

Construction work is already taking place to build mediacity:uk, which will include the BBC's new northern headquarters. The Salford Quays development is expected to create 15,500 jobs and bring ?1 billion to the regional economy in its first five years. The new Metrolink extension to mediacity:uk is due to open in Summer 2010.

People can also find out more about the proposals, and make comments on them, by calling 0161 244 1111 or online at www.gmpte.com/haveyoursay. The deadline for feedback to be received is Monday 14 April.
