Police Appeal to Trace Sex Attacker One Week On - Swinton

Detectives in Salford have released photographs of a man they want to trace after a woman was sexually assaulted on her way to work.

One week after the 37-year-old woman was assaulted, police are making a fresh appeal to track her attacker down.

Shortly after 5am on Friday 21 November 2008, the woman was riding her bike on the A580 East Lancashire Road from Salford towards Manchester.

She got off her bike at the Total Garage and started to push it along the East Lancs Road.

As she walked past the alley way which leads to Sheringham Drive, she was suddenly grabbed from behind and pulled to the ground by a man who tried to force his hands down the woman's trousers and sexually assault her.

The victim started to scream and tried to push him off. A resident called police after hearing her being attacked.

The attacker then ran off down an alley.

He has been described as white, between 50 and 55 years old, 5ft 7ins tall, with short white or grey hair and of stocky build. He was clean-shaven and was wearing a black waist-length jacket with a motif on the upper arm, black gloves and black trousers.

Detective Chief Inspector Jon Chadwick, of Salford CID, said: "We believe the offender passed this woman as she rode her bike near to Moorside High School.

"This was very early in the morning and there were not many people about at the time. However, motorists who may have been travelling to work may have seen the offender walking along the street.

"I'm appealing for anyone who may know who this man is to contact us. You may think what you saw was not significant, but it may be crucial in our investigation.

"Please look at the CCTV photographs and call us if you know who this man is.

"Fortunately, incidents like this are rare, but whoever carried out this attack on this lone woman as she made her way to work is dangerous and we need all the help we can in tracking her attacker down."
