Posted by Editor on 16th July 2009 at 01:37 PM Exclusive: The First International Salford Music festival
Words by Tony Flynn
Filmed and Edited: Tony Thornborough, Tricia Thornborough Local musical entrepreneur and Salford City Radio presenter Ed Blaney has unveiled his plans for the first ever Salford International Music Festival.
The idea came to Ed who was tired of other cities putting on music festivals whilst Salford has always been left in the shade, despite its famous musical heritage.
Ed has been in touch with Salford Council regarding funding for the event, which will be a non-profit making venture, and any profits made will be ploughed back into Salford music events.
The event which is planned for August 2010 is to be held at either Buile Hill Park or Barton Airport and will have three stages. Acts already approached to play include The Fall, The Happy Mondays, Dizzee Rascal, I Am Kloot and many up and coming Salford bands.
Ed has set up a Facebook group relating to this project and has already had over 360 members join in just four days.
UPDATE: The Facebook group now has over 460 members. To join, follow the link below.

Someone obviously has a vendetta against the poor lad Christos - I love opera and certainly know of him and have read of lots of great things he's done for Salford. Give the guy a break. Posessive Russell Watson fans me thinks..... |

Jon Christos is very well known in the opera world,so you can`t be much of a true opera fan can you? ,Mr Christos can actually perform opera live unlike some of the performers who like to market themselves as tenors and they are not, I fail to see what George Michael has to do with any of this was he mentioned in this article?I must have missed that. |

Read the piece in The Advertiser about the International Music Festival then watched your video article.
C'mon you really think New Order will reform for this when they don't even speak to each other?,the Happy Mondays are fragmented and in dispute over name rights, song writing royalties etc.,Dizee Rascal?,Purleeze..
Lets face it it ain't going to happen,we will end up with a poxy festival in some local park with local struggling bands, who I honestly wish well, and that's about it,I have played in bands over the years and seen the crap what goes down,a pipedream Ed.Prove me wrong please. |

The council will turn it over to the private sector and get all the credit. |

salford festival, turn it in. salford city council couldn't organise a big drink in a small brewery. who's gonna headline...fast cars. |

Goood on ya Mr Blaney, but what about a nod to the glory days of the Salford music scene at it most vibrant, the early sixties ( pre the scousers )can anyone remeber Graham Nash getting up in the Clowes and singing " Dirty old town " and peg-leg Pete, doing the weirdest dance you ever did see,( take note Bez ) I would take my hat off to you if you could track them two old timers down and persude to show the young folk what it used to be like in swinging Salford.
Yours : Salfords own, Danny Malone |

What a great idea to put Salford on the map at last. We have always been overshadowed by
Manchester! S.R. Swinton |

Lets put Salford on the map for the right reasons excellent idea |

very good idea. However,I do not like the comment "chucking money" at Russell. He is a local man who worked to achieve his goal.Sounds like soar grapes to me.He started off like everybody does,he is local and from the area where they are hoping to stage this, and it is good as it is convenient for his fans like me to reach. It has nothing to do with money,it is a hope that people will be reached who would not have access to the talent from this area.so I hope this boat will float.because I think positive. |

great idea, particularly with the beeb moving up to salford...should get excellent coverage. |

Salford Council must recognise the great talent of local boy and world renowned tenor Jon Christos and star him at this event along with Russell Watson. |
Comment by Guest 17th July 2009
What a good idea would be such a great event for the area and lots of different kinds of music, as i`m a classical fan would love to see the two `Salford` tenors sing at this if it happens Jon Christos and Russell Watson.Ani412 |

Agree with Eccles Girl. Russell Watson was top at the last Proms at Buile Hill, he would make a great addition. We've got musical talent from Salford coming out of our ears. DaveM |

Comment by Guest 16th July 2009
You really expect us to believe that this will happen?,no way will Salford Council finance/support this event in any way,the logistics of it are staggering. They will gladly chuck money at Russell Watson and The Halle because it will make them, the council look good.Best of luck Ed,but I don't think this boat will float.A Realist from Salford. |
