Music Night at The White Horse

By Tony Flynn

Edited by Tony Thornborough

Mellow Tones To Chill Your Bones was the title on the flyer and this was what  the audience who came to the inaugural folk evening got and more.

The compere and organiser for the evening was local musician Charlie White who treated an appreciative audience to a selection of self penned songs played  with some panache on a National Steel Dobro, the highlight for me was a brilliant version of The Velvet Undergrounds, “Waiting for my Man”, hardly a classic blues tune, yet somehow it worked perfectly.

Next up was Nick Dow, I spoke to Nick before the gig and was amazed to find that his job is restoring and building traditional Gypsy Caravans, one client being Rolling Stone’s guitarist Ronnie Wood, also he teaches schoolchildren about the Romany way of life and helps keep alive their history and traditions.
Anyone interested in this subject will be glad to know that Nick will be on BBC
One on Monday 19th October, failing that catch his Radio show on Radio Lancashire, Lancashire Blue Notes.

Nick’s set consisted of long forgotten Romany songs including, “Faithful Horse” and the old favourite “Master McGraw” a song about the only Irish dog to win the Waterloo Cup. He interspaced the songs with witty banter about stories of Appleby Fair and the Romany way of life, a set that was both musically pleasing and informative, all in all a very enjoyable set.

Last on stage was Roger Davies, a tall awkward looking chap, who once strapped on his Martin Guitar was transformed into a bona fida Pop Star. His self  penned songs delivered in his flat Yorkshire accent were amazing, he was both witty, sad, thoughtful and deadpan in his delivery. Most of the songs were off his latest CD “Northern Trash”, songs included a paean to his home town of Brighouse, West Yorkshire, a heartfelt song to his girlfriend entitled, “the Way You Love Me” and the hilarious, “Beerbelly Blues” which must surely hold the record for the most pub names in one song. I can not recommend Roger too highly, please go and see him if he is playing in your area, you will not be disappointed, failing that I urge to purchase his CD, “Northern Trash”, eleven tracks and not one duffer.
The audience appreciated him so much that he was called back for two encores, which went down really well and rounded of a great nights entertainment.

Charlie White the organiser has promised that there will be a regular music night at The White Horse on the last Thursday of each month, so no excuses get down there and support local, music venues in the area.

I recall when that pub was built. I think it was when the M602 was built. It was a bit "snotty." Anyone else have a problem with the video only playing the first few seconds? Or is it something to do with the trans Atlantic crossing ?
