Salford's online music academy takes off
by Tom Rodgers

If you've ever listened to Salford City Radio, you'll likely know who Chris Brophy is.

Variously Chris is a studio manager, radio presenter (with a sense of humour), internet entrepreneur and record producer, but his most recent success, which we're delighted about here at SalfordOnline is to get funding for his online music academy.

Music Industry Learning is Chris' company, teaching people about the ins and outs of the toughest business in the world. And it's free for unemployed people in Salford.

One recent graduate, Rebecca, said of the course:
"As of September I will also be studying music journalism. I believe having MIL on my CV helped get my application noticed and proved I had a real interest in the industry.

"I would recommend the course to anybody who isn't quite sure where to start their career in music as it's a perfect way to easily and flexibly learn about ALL aspects of the business and guide you honestly through starting off on your own."

The MIL course goes in depth into songwriting, production, marketing music and the science of making hit records, and Chris has seen some successes already without funding, but the grant that MIL has received from Salford's Community and Voluntary Service will allow him to buy Apple Mac computers and pro audio visual equipment.

Chris says he's planning to make 'apps' for the iPhone with his new gear, and a steadicam/greenscreen to that he can film his online video tutorials. Monthly workshops are also planned for Music Industry Learning with more to follow.

Thanks for the news story Tom! We are delighted to have been awarded this grant. We can now take what was our virtual course and deliver it face to face in the community. We are very excited to be filming the video tutorials next month, all of which will be available to view via our website. The new website is almost ready for launch so keep your eyes peeled at WWW.MUSICINDUSTRYLEARNING.COM
