Salford drummers go Brazilian for charity
by Mark Bright Salford University musicians, Yasmin Wilding and Dan Jones, will be playing the exotic sounds of Brazilian percussion music at the Royal Northern College of Music on Thursday April 15th, when acclaimed Manchester percussion and dance collective, Juba do Leão, perform at a charity concert for Christian Aid. Pronounced joo-bah (with a soft ‘j’) doo lay-yow, which means ‘lion’s mane’ in Brazilian Portuguese, the band was founded in 2005. Yasmin and Dan are studying music and Yasmin says that: “South America is a magical melting pot of musical styles and samba is still strongly connected to its roots of Brazil, which is an exciting country. Modern songs will have a connection with Brazilian rhythms. I have had so many wonderful experiences at parades, festivals, performances.” Dan agrees, adding that: “When we create a performance, the drumming and the dancing [Juba do Leão perform with dancers] are put together at the same time and are intrinsically linked.” MF This is the first time that Juba do Leão has performed at the RNCM and Dan is very excited by the prospect: “I can’t wait because the College is so prestigious,” he says. “It’ll be a wonderful experience to perform a different type of music there.” The concert also features the Eblana String Trio - Jonathan Martindale, from Sale and Lucy and Peggy Nolan from Dublin - three committed chamber musicians, who are passionate about performing the often neglected string trio repertoire. In their first year together, they won the RNCM Leonard Hirsch prize for the performance of Beethoven, and have performed concerts in Dublin and across the UK and in July 2009 went to Stellenbosch in South Africa for the 37th International Viola Congress. The trio’s repertoire includes works by Beethoven, Schubert, Dohnanyi and Finzi and they have also collaborated with other musicians in the Mozart Flute and Oboe Quartets and Brahms' Op 60 Piano Quartet. The concert starts at 7:30pm and tickets cost £10. To book, please contact the Christian Aid office in Warrington on 01925 573 769 or email warrington@christian-aid.org.
