Rise in ticket sales for BBC Proms in the Park in Salford
Tickets sales for BBC Proms in the Park in Salford are up on last year's figures and residents' tickets have sold out.

This year sees the highest demand for discounted residents' tickets and people are buying tickets faster than before with 5,000 tickets sold so far.

Residents have rushed to take advantage of the city council's ticket offer and all of the 4,000 tickets allocated to eight community committee areas across Salford have been snapped up.

General tickets for the concert at Buile Hill Park on 11 September are also selling better than previous years.

Musicals star John Barrowman will headline this year's BBC Proms in the Park in Salford.

He will join Salford's own orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, on stage at the event.

BBC Proms in the Park in Salford is part of the BBC's spectacular Last Night of the Proms celebrations, as people come together at venues across the UK to be part of the magic of the Last Night.

The concert culminates in a live big-screen link-up with the Royal Albert Hall for the traditional participatory festivities and flag waving, rounding off the world's largest classical music festival.

Tickets priced at £20 each (inclusive of postage and booking fees) are still available for the event and can be bought by calling 0844 815 7131 or logging onto www.visitsalford.info/proms.

Concert goers are encouraged to bring their own flags, chairs and picnic rugs but no tables are allowed.

John Barrowman is known the world over as Captain Jack in Torchwood and Doctor Who. He has most recently been guesting as a villain in the hit US TV series Desperate Housewives.

He started his career as a leading man in West End musicals, starring alongside Elaine Page in Anything Goes, and has gone on to further success in productions ranging from Chicago, the Phantom of the Opera and Miss Saigon to Love's Labours Lost, Aladdin and A Few Good Men

Councillor Barry Warner, the council's lead member for culture and sport said: "There's been an even higher demand for residents' tickets this year proving that BBC Proms in the Park in Salford is more popular than ever with local people.

"We've got a great line-up of acts which I'm sure will promise another great night of entertainment and I'm delighted we're able to give residents the chance to watch a world-class performance right here in their home city of Salford."

BBC Proms in the Park in Salford is a highlight of the city's Events to Shout About programme and last year pulled in crowds of around 8,000.

Excerpts of all the Last Night of the Proms celebrations are broadcast on BBC Radio and Television, with satellite and cable viewers also able to watch all the action live from their local park via the red button on their TV remote control.

The news that the event will once again be in Salford comes as the BBC Philharmonic prepares to move from Manchester to its new home at MediaCityUK at Salford Quays next year, joining the rest of the BBC North at the organisation's new regional hub.
