The Black Knights
by Tony Flynn

Local duo The Black Knights are set for major success with the launch of their new album.

The album "Sickle Sell Saturday night" will be given a BBC launch at The Ruby Lounge on Friday , August 27th.

The band consist of guitarist Gary L Hope and Thomas Richard Pickford 111 on drums, a powerhouse duo who whip up a veritable storm with their high energy shows.

The Black Knights have been described as a Voodoo Trash Blues duo which isn't too far off the mark with their bluesy swampy sound, to my ears they sound like The Black Keys but better.

The Black Knights have shared stages with Band of Skulls, The Hot Melts, Lissy Trullie, Doll and The Kicks, and To The Bones to name a few.

This year the boys played a storming set at The Sounds From The Other City music convention on Chapel Street and are going from strength to strength getting rave reviews in the music press.

This gig is followed by two performances in Spain at Torrelanega and Santander, surely global domination will follow.

The gig will be compered by Vinny Peculiar. So come along and see the most powerful musical duo Salford has ever produced and have the racism blown out of you. TT

I am white and have the sickle cell trait, so the person claiming racism is the only person being racist here , by claiming only black people can get the disease, which is a lie, if you hate racists take a look in the mirror. People need to be more educated, it's people like you that cause racism, not stop it. I have had the pleasure of watching the black knights live and they are an awesome experience, passion and talent in abundance, the guitarist is as good as angus young (ACDC) and the drummer has better arms that Rafael Nadal. Can't wait to watch them again. Album has been purchased and is top of the queue on the ipod.

Lets stick with the brilliant Black Knights shall we, this is who the article was written about, so stop trying to plug other bands, tell them to send their stuff into SalfordOnline and let them decide, they seem to know what they are talking about when it comes to music. Black Knights we salute you.

Fair enough Gary (from five comments ago) but that's a bit of an oblique reference. I've both seen and read Fight Club and forgot that he went to that specific support group. I just assumed "Sickle Sell" was a joke in dubious taste but thanks for explaining.

Hmm nice bit of shameless self-promotion from Hard Luck Child there on someone else's story.... er? And I can hardly see them (HLC) eating anyone for breakfast when they have one of the most lethally rubbish drummers in town. Whoops. - Black Knights Fan

Gary L Hope from the band here. We are NOT white supremacists. The title is a modification of 'Sickle Cell Friday Night' which avid readers and filmwatchers will recognise as one of the support groups the Narrator visits in 'Fight Club'. Nothing more. Is Chuck Palahniuk therefore a racist? No. Please consider the ramifications of pronouncing people you don't know as such. Thanks.

Guest before last, if you find an album title is making you "shudder with revulsion and fear" then I suggest you get out more, perhaps even go and see this cracking band before jumping to wild conclusions? PeteM

Hang about the album is called "Sickle Sell Saturday Night not Sickle Cell Saturday night. I know the boys and believe me they aint racist, stop seeing racism where there is none, an unfortunate play upon words at the least.

Sickle cell is a type of anaemia that only black people have. Why have they done this. I find it very disturbing that these people should be capitalising a disease that only black people can get. I hate racism in its every form and these people must be part of some sort of white supremacist group. They make me shudder with revulsion and fear.

I have seen these boys play, what an act, the frontman is so cool and his guitar playing p*sses on Jack White, the drummer is relentless, see 'em while you can, best live act around for years.
