Salford's Ren Harvieu makes BBC Sound of 2012
21 year old Salford-born singer Ren Harvieu has made the BBC's top list of singers to watch in 2012. Ren, who grew up in Broughton, has her debut single Through The Night released on January 16th through Kid Gloves/Island Records. Ren sang in the odd local talent show, one called ‘Salford Superstar’ and attended what she calls "the Primark version of a performing arts school" where she was told she couldn’t sing. While trawling through Myspace, she chanced upon the man who would later become her manager, Paul Harrison, and within six months she was signed to Island Records. It was originally slated for release on July 4th this year until Ren suffered a terrible accident which left her with a broken back and not knowing whether she would ever walk again. While on tour in the US, Ren had already - incredibly - been asked to collaborate with hip-hop superstar Nas. She then found out that she was to perform on the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury. But an unnamed man "messing about at a party" vaulted over a hedge, hurtled through the air, and landed on Ren’s spine. Two of her vertebrae broke straightaway and the next two months were spent in a hospital in North London. But after a miraculous recovery in less than three months, Ren is back on her feet and finally ready to release her first single. Also on the BBC longlist are for the Sound of 2012 are: A$AP Rocky; Azealia Banks; Dot Rotten; Dry The River; Flux Pavilion; Frank Ocean; Friends; Jamie N Commons; Lianne La Havas; Michael Kiwanuka; Niki & The Dove; Skrillex; Spector and Stooshe.
