John Herring starts again with second album
by Tom Rodgers
One of the area's most talented singer-songwriters is about to release a new album. Not only a lovely bloke, John Herring is also a master at tugging the heartstrings with his soulful tunes, and will release ‘It Starts Again’ on 5th March, with a single download of the same name out from 16th January. John rose to prominence with long-awaited first album 'Tales of a Northern City' in 2009. Crowd favourites like the lush 'Home' talk of loving the place where you grew up ("We can go anywhere/With home in our heart"), and for this writer, Salford was the only place to go to record new material. Back in Blueprint Studios (home of Elbow) to record the new material, John is again working with engineer and co-producer, Gary Vaughan-Hadfield. The pair have focused on bringing a more expansive sound to the new record, scoring strings, trumpets and choirs, recorded at his last gig at Sacred Trinity Church in Salford. You would have to have a heart of stone not to like John's work and these latest cuts promise more moving and heartwarming tunes. "Unlike the last album I now have a steady band of excellent musicians, so there is a real cohesiveness to the album. This is showcasing the best of my songwriting," he said. Iconic pub The Kings Arms - now with the pedigree of a singer-songwriter owner of its own in ex-Housemartin Paul Heaton - will play host to the launch party for It Starts Again on 2nd March, with a sneak preview of the new album available. The first show from the new tour promises to be a cracker, as anyone who's seen John live can attest: see for yourself at The Deaf Institute on 17th March. Tickets are available in advance at www.john-herring.com or www.thedeafinstitute.co.uk priced £7.00, doors open at 7.30pm. Image: John Herring at Islington Mill.
