Mark Ashmore's new Salford soldiers film

by Tom Rodgers

Here's a little something extra for you from the SalfordOnline archives; an interview with director and filmmaker Mark Ashmore who runs Future Artists at Salford's Islington Mill.

We questioned Mark about the recent Salford Film Festival, his opinions on the quality of the films that were shown, and his personal plans to continue making films.

Mark's most recent subject was the attitude to soldiers in the UK, explored in Broken Britain. In it, four friends return from the theatre of war, drinking to their lost friend.

"But the sign outside the club makes it clear that there will be 'No Soldiers' in tonight. How do you get in to pay your respects to your dead mates mum and apologies to your girlfriend?"

Now Mark plans to expand on these themes with Big Boys Don't Send Postcards, working with several ex soliders that have served in Afghan, a gritty look at the work our men and women
do overseas in Britain's foreign war.

Independent filmmaking in this country is a difficult business, especially when you have to fund everything yourself. So his current project, Big Boys Don't Send PostCards, needs your help to see the light of day. Everyone who donates will have the satisfaction of knowing
they can "give our servicemen and women a voice, and show the general public what it takes to fight a war," says Mark.

For a £12 donation, you get your name in the credits, a mention on the website, and an invite to the premiere, at the Hilton Cloud Bar in Manchester. 50 quid towards the cause will buy you "a private screening of the film, you'll be invited to comment on the rough cut of the trailer, come to dinner with us, and get your name at the start of the credits, in a BIG FONT!"

For those of you with a little more to spare, a £500 donation gets you a VIP day out with the film crew; you can be on set when the trailer is shot, you'll get dinner with the director producer, cast and crew and a chance to be in the film itself, with a "Guest Star" credit.
