I think...I'll have another one - Philosophy in Pubs, Eccles
by Tony Flynn

Wednesday evening saw the inaugural meeting of the Eccles branch of PIPs, or better known as Philosophy In Pubs, at the Albert Edward, Church Street, Eccles.

The Eccles leader, Nicola Smith, explained to me what the aims of the society are and where they'll be meeting over the next few months in Eccles town centre pubs.

The meetings - which are free to attend - are not meant to be highbrow but will enquire into the most awkward and troublesome questions that human beings can conceive, be it Art, Literature, Religion, Sport, History, Science etc, the challenge is to search for answers to these questions.

About ten people turned up at the meeting, which was encouraging as this was the first time that the group had met.

The talk soon turned to literature and the difficulty that some members had with understanding the meanings of certain authors.

As I left the merits of Socrates were being discussed, not an everyday occurence in an Eccles pub on a Wednesday night, and I wish them well with there future meetings.

The PIP group was set up only recently in the North West but has regular meetings in various public houses, so if you wish to know more about the Eccles group, text Nicola on 07759 440515.

Smallish rooms in there Tony, as I recall. Hard to imagine more than 10 fitting in. Question is: did you learn anything?
