Video: Eccles Library - sneak peek
by Tony Flynn

I took a sneak look at the Eccles library currently under refurbishment, it has been closed since 2008 and is due to open on June 1st this year.

The building opened in October 1907 and was gifted to the town by the steel magnate Andrew Carnegie and designed by Edward Potts, and has a Grade 11 listed status.

Inside are marvelous examples of plaster fresco work showing the heads of famous authors, also a wonderful stained glass window showing the date the library was opened.

I am really looking forward to the library re opening as the books and computers in the next door Gateway are hardly adequate for the number of visitors they receive, so roll on June 1st.

Correct the Gateway is a monstrosity, and I am told it will link into the beautiful Edwardian Library by means of a rolled shutter doors!, for godness sake leave our buildings alone. However the renovation work does look superb and I look forward to walking around the old Eccles library again, this time with my eyes wide open at the stunning friese/fresco plaster work.

I wonder which imbecile granted planning permission for the new monstrosity now adjoining it.
