Video Exclusive: Christopher Eccleston talks to SalfordOnline
by Tony Flynn

Just before Christopher Eccleston did the unveiling ceremony at the newly refurbished Eccles Gateway Library, he kindly took time out to talk to me about growing up in Salford, his school days, the influence that his parents have had on him, and the impact that going to the library as a young boy influenced his future career as an actor.

It was refreshing to find out just how down to earth that he is and his genuine affection for Salford and its people. This showed itself when he spoke not only to the Mayor George Wilson and council dignitaries but took time out to speak to the library staff, speak to the school children from Lewis Street primary school and pose for endless amounts of photographs.

He was keen to stress that today was about Eccles Gateway Library and not his acting career, and that he considered it a great honour to be asked to officially declare the library open, which he did with genuine enthusiasm.

Great to see a local boy who has done well with his feet still firmly rooted to the ground, a credit to Salford and an inspiration for any youngster in Salford.

Great quote by Christopher Eccleston in yesterdays Guardian about his beloved Manchester United and his hate of the Glazer family. As a protest he will not be renewing his season ticket after twenty years, "I won't be giving any more money to those bastards". You tell 'em Chris. Salford Red.

I think I prefer this interview with Chris Eccleston to the role he played as John Lennon on TV last week, seems a nice down to earth Salfordian.

I remember Mrs Hays as well! Wonderful teacher! Favourite word - beautiful - everyone could spell it by the end of the year in her class. RH

Well done Tony, this is excellent. I loved the I won't quote the Manics "Libraries gave us power" bit, but actually did. That was so funny. Plus Chris is a true inspiration for us all in Salford. Top bloke Hope to see you soon pal. T.Stagediver.

I learned more about Christopher Eccleston by watching this video than by reading any magazine article. A great insight into the man, and a great video, Salford should be proud of him.

Chris is a top guy and still uses his local ammenities, love it when he sits in the Park in Monton and watches footy just like everyone else

Full marks to Chris Eccleston and Tony for such a great interview, Chhristopher comes across as a really downn to earth character, and some great stories about his life in Salford, a hope for every child with so called remedial problems, probably the best interview you have done on SalfordOnline, onwards and upwards.

For a man whose work is all about words he is absolutely SOUND! Excellent use of words and clear supporter of libraries but a man who is also PROUD of his background, a real genuine Salford lad. Well done Tony to make Chris feel relaxed enough to give such a wonderful interview.

Don't get me wrong, I am a HUGE fan of Chris Eccleston's work (seriously, I run a fan page!) but this interview is more interesting than any about an acting job. I used to work in a children's book store and the biggest thrill for me was when a child who felt they couldn't read or be 'clever' in that way found a book they loved and came back for another. Great interview, great thoughts. Ruth.
