Before the Bench 1876: Part Two

Here we have another look at life in Salford in 1876 as viewed from Salford Magistrates Court and what a collection we have. The offences range from cruelty to a donkey, distilling your own whiskey, violence in pubs by both men and women, police assault, pickpockets at Salford Race Course, attempting to dodge your train fare, the theft of copper and brass (still very popular these days), and obtaining a whip by false pretences (not so popular). James Fox aged 18 was arrested by Sgt Barrington and charged with cruelty to a cow beating the same with a stick. He was fined 10 shillings. George Holden aged 42 was arrested by PC Johnson and charged with being drunk and asleep in charge of a horse and cart on the Crescent. He was fined £1 or 14 days imprisonment. William Proctor aged 22 was arrested by PC Brown and charged with stealing a pair of womens boots from the shop belonging to Charles Toppliance, Broad Street, Pendleton, to the value of 3/3d. He was given one months hard labour. Edward Kennedy aged 24 was arrested by PC Crew and charged with riotous and disorderly conduct and making use of obscene language in the Manor Inn, Church Steet. He was fined 7/6d. William King aged 51 was arrested by PC Godfrey and charged with obtaining a whip by false pretences. He was remanded in custody. William Howell aged 19 was arrested by PC Snelson and charged with travelling from Liverpool to Salford by Lancs and Yorkshire Railway without a ticket and refusing to pay his fare. He was remanded in custody. John Royle aged 33 was arrested by PC Tause and charged with being a person apparently of unsound mind at the Militia Barracks, Eccles New Road. He was sent to the local asylum. John Ford aged 25 was arrested by PC Wolfenden and charged with begging in Northumberland Street, Higher Broughton. He was remanded in custody. Robert Lawless aged 20 was arrested by PC Asprey and charged with stabbing Elizabeth Doyle, in the face at Gore Street, Salford. He was remanded in custody. Eliza Firth aged 39 was arrested by PC Cassidy and charged with violently assaulting Mary Brasendale by throwing a drinking glass at her, striking her on the head and face in the Foresters Arms, beer house, Barrow Street. She was remanded in custody. James Rogers aged 60 was arrested by Sgt Sovalt and was charged with being in breach of the Excise Act and being in possesion of of a private still and manufacturing whiskey at 14 Vine Street, Pendleton. He was sentenced to two months imprisonment. Mary Connelly aged 39 was arrested by PC Hulme by being drunk and disorderly, and assaulting him by biting and kicking him. She was sentenced to one months imprisonment. William Gadsley was arrested by PC Bridgeland and charged with cruelly treating a donkey by kicking it and striking it with a whip, off Gt Clowes Steet, Salford. He was fined 10 shillings or 14 days imprisonment. John Pennington aged 55 was arrested by PC Murray and charged with stealing a black cloth coat, the value of 10/, the property of Joseph Driver, from a coach house at Bank House, Higher Broughton. He was sentenced to four months imprisonment with hard labour. William Slater aged 15 was arrested by PC White and charged with playing pitch and toss on Hankinson Street. He was fined 2/6d or three days imprisonment. He was remanded in custody. Charles Tucker aged 16, John Ogden aged 14, and Henry Levi aged 15 were arrested by Sgt Buck and charged with attempting to pick pockets at Salford Race Course.
