Before the Bench 1879: Part One
Here we look at the felons who appeared before the Salford Magistrates Court in 1879, and what a variety of offences we have to show, ranging from playing cards in the street, stealing a dog, refusing to pay cab fares, vagrancy, breaking out of Salford Workhouse, playing football in the street, lighting bonfires and even stealing the candlesticks from Salford Cathedral! So take a peep and see if any of your ancestors were Before the Bench all those years ago. John Duggan aged 28 was arrested by PC Orr and charged with being drunk and fighting on Licensed Premises, The Griffin Inn, Chapel Street and assaulting PC Orr in the execution of his duty. He was fined 40 shillings. John Jones aged 12 was arrested by PC Grafton and charged with found to be wandering and not having proper guardianship. He was remanded to Salford Workhouse. John Barker aged 14 was arrested by PC Spiby and charged with gambling by playing cards in Canal Street. He was fined 1 shilling. William Feeney aged 16 was arrested by PC Orr and charged with riotous and disorderly conduct by shouting and jostling foot passengers in Robert Hall Street. He was fined 10 shillings. Kate Webb aged 21 was arrested by PC Meads and charged with being drunk and refusing to pay her cabfare on Regent Road. She was remanded in custody. James Alexander aged 11 was arrested by PC Taylor and charged with being a vagrant and sleeping in a brick kiln in Hodge Lane, Pendleton. He was remanded to the Salford Workhouse. Richard Heap aged 36 was arrested by PC Evans and charged with breaking out of the Salford Workhouse, Eccles New Road. He was sentenced to 14 days imprisonment. Mary Hall aged 26 was arrested by PC White and charged with the theft of a chair from the shop of Robert Kernahan, Sussex Street, Broughton. She was imprisoned for 7 days. William Cooper aged 18 was arrested by PC Spiby and charged with riotous and disorderly conduct by shouting and kicking a football on the footpath on East Robert Street. He was fined 10 shillings. George Higgins aged 11 was arrested by PC McCaw and charged with stealing 3/6d from a drawer in his mothers house in Charlotte Street, Broughton. He was sent to Bolton Industrial School. George Evans aged 18 was arrested by PC Quick and charged with stealing three ounces of tobacco from the shop of Martha Bailey, Chapel Street, the value of nine pence. He was given one months hard labour in Strangeways prison. George Bramwell aged 34 was arrested by PC Caw and charged with selling sand without a licence under the Pedlars Act in Wilfred Street, Broughton. He was fined 10 shillings. Thomas Buck aged 13 was arrested by Sgt Eyre and charged with having in his possession in Liverpool Street, a sheepdog supposed stolen for which he could not account. He was discharged. Peter Clayton aged 17 and James Gray aged 16 were arrested by PC Wood and charged with disorderly conduct and making a bonfire in Dawson Street. Clayton was sentenced to 7 days imprisonment and Gray, 3 days. James Kelly aged 24 was arrested by PC Quick and charged with deserting from HMS Black Prince of Agincourt. He was sent back to his ship. Mary Hughes aged 37 was arrested by PC Wood and charged with stealing two brass candle sticks from the altar of St John's Cathedral. She was remanded in custody.
