Before the Bench 1879: Part Two

Here we take our final look at the people who appeared before Salford Magistrates Court in 1879 and once again a motley collection of villians and crimes, ranging from deserting from Salford Workhouse, stealing a calf from Salford Cattle Market, wife assault, wandering without proper guardianship, drunk in beerhouses, attempted arson, the theft of pigeons, all in all a very mixed bunch, so take a look and see if any of your relatives were "Before the Bench" all those years ago. Thomas Hyman aged 31 was arrested by PC Meade and charged with suspicion of stealing one chest of tea to the value of 30 shillings from the shop door of James Theophilus, Greengate. He was remanded in custody. Joseph Tobin aged 23 was arrested by PC Chesworth and charged with stealing a table, the value of 4/6d from 13 Hankinson Street the property of Richard Allsopp. He was sentenced to six weeks imprisonment. Dennis Ryan aged 41 was arrested by PC Lewis and charged with being drunk in the Barley Sheaf beerhouse, Chapel Street. He was fined seven shillings. John Carty aged 22 was arrested by PC Kidd and charged with being drunk and sleeping on the Salford Carriage Company, Weaste. He was fined ten shillings. John Simpson aged 58 was arrested by PC Smith and charged with begging under the Vagrancy Act, on Cross Lane, Salford. He was sentenced to one days imprisonment. George Tate aged 19 and John Smith aged 24 were arrested by PC Hodgkinson and charged with breaking and entering into a pigon cote situated on Bolton Road, Pendleton and stealing 4 pigeons, the property of Mr W. Shaw. George Tate was sentenced to fourteen days imprisonment, John Smith was sentenced to one months imprisonment. John Boothman aged 39 was arrested by PC Parker and charged with being drunk and attempting to set fire to a house, namely, 382 Eccles New Road. He was remanded in custody. Charles Davis aged 20 and James Hanford aged 29 were arrested by PC Rigby and charged with thoughtfully tearing up their clothes in the tramp ward of the Salford Union. Both men were sentenced to fourteen days imprisonment. William Jones aged 37 was arrested by PC Horton and charged with assaulting his wife, Julia by striking her on the back of her head with an iron kettle. He was remanded in custody. William Deaville aged 23 was arrested by PC Spalding and charged with being drunk and disorderly and refusing to leave the Hare and Hounds beerhouse, Pendleton. He was sentenced to seven days imprisonment. Rachel Kelly aged 57 was arrested by PC Oliver and charged with being absent from the Salford Workhouse without leave, also disposing of certain articles of clothing the property of the Salford Board of Guardians, viz two shawls, two petticoats and one apron the value of 15 shillings. She was imprisoned for seven days. William Henry Brandish aged 10 was arrested by Sgt Eyre and charged with wandering with no proper guardianship. He was sent toYork Industrial School. Samuel Webster aged 38 was arrested by PC Drysdale and charged with stealing a calf, value of 30 shillings from the Salford Cattle Market, Cross Lane. He was remanded in custody. Robert McIntyre aged 13 was arrested by PC Smith and charged with stealing one butchers knife, one sheeps heart and a small piece of mutton value 1/5d from the Salford Cattle market, Cross Lane. He was given five strokes of the birch by Inspector Tomkinson. Ambrose Whelan aged 28 was arrested by PC Evans and charged with being absent from the Union Workhouse without leave from 2pm until 10:15pm also walking away with a fustian coat belonging to the Guardians of Salford Unions the value of seven shilling.
