Before the Bench 1876: March and April

Here we present the last selection from the Salford Magistrates book of prisoners offenses from the months of March and April, and once again a varied selection, assault, stealing an umbrella, attempting to stab a policeman, drunk in Salford Workhouse even being in possession of odd shoes!

George Thomason aged 25 was arrested by PC Pritchett and charged with breaking into a house at 28 Ellor Street, Salford with intent to commit a felony.

He was sentenced to 7 days imprisonment.

Francis Seaman aged 31 was arrested by PC Callanaw and charged with being drunk and disorderly in Regent Road and refusing to pay his cab fare.

He was fined 10 shillings.

John Humphrey aged 18 was arrested by PC Cain and charged with fraudulently enlisting in the 1st Lancashire Militia at the same time belonging to the 6th Royal Lancashire Militia.

He was fined £5 and given 2 months hard labour.

James Williams aged 49 was arrested by PC Ormorod and charged with being drunk and disorderly in the Salford Workhouse and assaulting the porter, Mr Robert Power, also assaulting PC Ormorod in the execution of his duty.

He was sentenced to fourteen days imprisonment.

John Hughes aged 53 was arrested by PC Dixon and charged with having in his possession a leather case containing 21 odd boots and 4 odd shoes for which he could not account for.

He was discharged from the court.

Mary Ann Edge aged 37 was arrested by Sgt Quick and charged with stealing a cotton shirt from the shop of Edward Fazackerly, Regent Road, the value of 2/6d.

She was given two months imprisonment.

Richard Heyes aged 40 was arrested by PC Gilmore and charged with being drunk and disorderly in Rockcliffe Street, and attempting to stab PC Gilmore in the police office, Salford.

He was remanded in custody to the sessions.

Mary Meyers aged 45 was arrested by PC Howard and charged with suspicion of stealing an umbrella which she had in her possession.

She was remanded in custody.

Margaret Payne aged 31 was arrested by PC Frazer and charged with stealing a pair of boots, a chemise from the house of Daniel Kay, Wesleyan Chapel, Higher Broughton.

She was given 1 months imprisonment with hard labour.

Elizabeth Ward aged 36 was arrested by Sgt Thorpe and charged with stealing 2lb of fish and 1lb of tongue from the shop of Ann Gordon Regent Road, to the value of 1 shilling.

She was given 1 months hard labour.

Walter Graham aged 36 was arrested by PC Hough and charged with violently assaulting Edward Mulroy by knocking his head against the door of the Royal Anchor public house, Chapel Street, , causing damage to the door to the value of 30 shillings.

He was fined 30 shillings and given one months imprisonment.

William Brown aged 42 was arrested by PC Irvine and charged with being in possession of a whitewash brush which he could not account for.

He was remanded in custody for one week.
