Video: Go Hungry to help Salford poor and homeless
by Tom Rodgers

As part of Poverty and Homelessness Action Week, Salford students are campaigning to raise awareness of the scandal of families who struggle to afford even the basics in life.

Three Salford students on the Design Futures course at Salford are taking on the challenge to raise funds for various charities across Greater Manchester.

The Go Hungry campaign is asking people to skip lunch for one day and to donate the money they would otherwise have spent.

We follow Design Futures student Diane McBride as she starts her first ever soup run from the Ancoats base of Mustard Tree to help feed the city's homeless.

Mustard Tree, who have recently opened a charity shop in Eccles, aim to help the thousands of families across Salford and Manchester who suffer below the poverty line or fall into homelessness.

The idea was created by Adrian Bentley from Just Good Ideas to help fundraise for the Mustard Tree charity.

Said Diane: "We aim to engage people to consider their own lives and actions in contrast to the day to day lifestyle of the disadvantaged population, who usually do not have the option of deciding whether to eat or not."

Thanks to all the volunteers at St Mary's Church in Gorton for their help in making this film.

Poverty and Homelessness Action Week runs from 28th January to 5th February. Go to Go Hungry to help out, or find out more at the links below.
