Alker to combine coaching and playing

Salford have added long-serving captain Malcolm Alker to their coaching staff and completed the signing of Castleford prop Ryan Boyle.

Alker, 30, who has been with the Reds all his career, was on Tuesday officially unveiled as an assistant to Shaun McRae, although he will continue playing.

"I'm no fool," he said. "I know that I cannot continue playing forever and I am looking to end my career on a high. Coaching will be a new challenge for me and I know that I will have to learn to combine it with playing the game this season."

He added: "It may be difficult with split loyalties between the players and the coaches but I am really confident I can make a great go of it."

Salford director of football Steve Simms said: "Malcolm is at the start of a new journey with the club."

Meanwhile, Salford have signed the 21-year-old Boyle, an Ireland international, on a two-year deal.

Simms said: "Ryan is a very good up-and-coming prop. He's tough and uncompromising and he's already playing international football with Ireland."
